The Z31 300ZX replaced the 280ZX in 1983, and was produced until it was in turn replaced by the Z32 300ZX in 1989. Nissan's aim with the 300ZX was to produce a car with exhilaration, performance, and beauty. It was to maintain the great Z-Car tradition, but with greater refinements over previous models. To this end, it was fitted with the brand new VG30E and VG30ET engines, being a 3.0 liter V6, and 3.0 liter Turbo V6 respectively. This improved performance levels over those available form the aging L28, which had been emasculated by US Federal regulations. The traditional Z-Car wedge shape was also maintained, with an 80's twist. The traditional deeply recessed round headlights where replaced by semi-retractable rectangular unit, and the shape was more angular. The Targa top, fast on it's way to becoming another Z tradition was also retained. Like the 280ZX, the Z31 was offered in four variants: 2 Str, 2str Targa, 2+2 and 2+2 Targa. Interior luxury was again stepped up, with the introduction of 8 way electrically controlled seats, and higher all round interior quality (which was seen as one of the 280ZXs major shortfalls)

What was at the time regarded as a sophisticated stereo was also fitted. This consisted of a stereo AM/FM radio cassette with 6 or 8 speakers (the upper models having 8, the lesser cars having 6). Since the Z was, and still is Nissan's Hero car, it had to have a level of technical sophistication befitting it's station. To this end, the most expensive model GLLs where fitted with a digital dash and compass, and built in alarm system with immobilizer. Along with the new Engine came new suspension in the form of front MacPherson struts, and a rear system developed from that of the 280ZX.

VG30 engines:
The Z31 series where the first Nissans to be fitted with the all new VG30 series engines. These new engines where 3.0 liter V6 units, available in turbo and non-turbo forms. Both where fuel injected. The cylinders where arranged in a 60 degree V configuration to reduce over all size and weight. The crank shaft is considerably shorter than that used in the L-series, and requires only four bearings, rather than seven. The combustion chambers are compact examples of the penthouse type, with the spark plugs situated close to the bore center for minimum flame propagation. Both the VG30E and VG30ET are equipped with ECCS (Electronic Concentrated Engine Control System) EFI, but the turbo model runs a lower compression at 7.8:1 rather than 9.0:1. The Turbo version mounts a more advanced version of the EFI, and concave piston heads for an optimal compression ratio. At 162 kg for the VG30E with auto (21kg lighter than the L28E used on the 280ZX), the VG series are very light weight engines for their size, making for excellent power to weight ratio.
